Basic Filter not working

For quite a while now my basic filter is not working. I check 'exclude' a couple of groups, and check 'Is in any of these groups'.
I want to include all my contacts except for the ones that have a couple of groups listed.
I am frustrated because I have to go through the exported list and take out several of the contacts listed and even then I don't know which ones I'm missing. I have over 700 contacts, so I cannot go through each name.
I would use the advanced filter but it only includes things, not excluding things i'd like to exclude.
